CHILD COUNSELLING

Children experience the world with wonder, curiosity, and big feelings that sometimes feel too heavy for little hearts. They may struggle to find the words to explain what’s happening inside, and that’s where counselling can offer a gentle helping hand. A safe, playful space allows children to explore emotions, build confidence, and discover healthy ways to cope with life’s changes.

Every child deserves a space that honours their feelings and celebrates their strengths. Through creativity, kindness, and care, counselling becomes a journey of support, helping children grow into themselves with balance and resilience.

At Serenity in the City Counselling Centre, child counselling is designed to be calm, nurturing, and age‑appropriate. Using play and storytelling, sessions help children communicate what they may not yet have words for, while parents are supported with guidance and resources to continue the journey at home. Whether they are navigating big feelings, behavioural concerns, developmental transitions, or family changes, counselling offers them a nurturing environment where they feel seen, heard, and valued.

Why Child Counselling is Only Offered in Person?

At Serenity in the City Counselling Centre, child counselling is offered IN PERSON ONLY. This is because children often communicate through play rather than words, and online platforms can feel limiting or overwhelming for them.

In‑person sessions allow us to:

How can Child Counselling Help?

Counselling with children is not about stopping behaviour, but about understanding what the behaviour communicates. Children often express themselves through play rather than words, and every action, theme, or pattern can carry meaning. By paying close attention to these expressions, counselling becomes a way of listening deeply to what a child is trying to show us.

In the Caterpillar Room, children don’t have to talk, make eye contact, or answer questions for counselling to be meaningful. Instead, play itself becomes the language to the following:

Exploring Themes & Patterns

Noticing how play reflects feelings, worries, or hopes.

Tolerating Big Feelings

Creating space where emotions can be safely expressed and gently regulated.

Building Confidence

Discovering strengths through creative play and supportive guidance.

Strengthening Connections

Learning trust and relationship skills in a safe environment.

Supporting Emotional Health

Developing resilience and balance through playful exploration.

What You Can Expect for your child

Starting counselling can feel uncertain, but sessions are designed to be gentle and supportive, allowing your child to settle in at their own pace. Our playroom, called ‘The Caterpillar Room’, is designed to allow children to play, explore safely, express themselves, and experience counselling as something gentle and supportive rather than scary.

Just as caterpillars transform gently and naturally into butterflies, children in this space are given the freedom to grow, explore, and discover at their own pace. This is because, at Serenity in the City Counselling Centre, big feelings are welcome.

In the Caterpillar Room, you can expect:

  • A welcoming environment where play, art, and movement are the main ways children express themselves.
  • Careful observation of themes and patterns in play to understand what behaviour may be communicating.
  • Space for big feelings to be expressed safely, with guidance toward regulation.
  • Clear boundaries that uphold safety and respect, while giving children meaningful freedom and autonomy.
  • Parent involvement through feedback and resources, typically shared after 5-6 sessions, to help you support your child at home.
  • Confidentiality, with your child’s voice respected and feedback focused on wellbeing rather than repeating what is shared.

Counselling here is adapted to your child’s unique needs. By honouring their way of communicating, we help them grow into themselves with confidence, connection, and wellbeing.

FAQ – Child Counselling Services

Child counselling is a gentle, age‑appropriate process that helps children explore emotions, behaviours, and experiences in a safe, supportive space. Using play, and storytelling, children can express themselves in ways that feel natural, while parents receive guidance to continue supporting their child at home.

Parents are consulted to provide background information before sessions commence and are provided with feedback, guidance, and resources after 5-6 sessions. This ensures you feel equipped to understand and respond to your child’s needs with compassion, while continuing the journey beyond the counselling room.

Children often communicate through play rather than words, and online platforms can feel limiting or overwhelming for them. In‑person sessions allow for hands‑on activities, natural connection, and a safe environment where big feelings can be expressed and gently regulated.

Counselling can help children navigate big feelings, behavioural concerns, developmental transitions, family changes, stress, anxiety, and loss. Each child’s journey is unique, and sessions are tailored to meet them where they are.

We see behaviour as communication, not something to “stop.” By understanding what behaviour is expressed, we can support your child in healthier ways. Counselling helps children regulate emotions, build resilience, and develop confidence, rather than focusing on control or correction.

Yes. Sessions are private and confidential. What your child shares in the Caterpillar Room is respected and not disclosed directly to parents. Instead, we offer supportive feedback and guidance to help you understand and respond to your child’s needs with compassion.
